Member Spotlight

Ashley Heatley, CRNP

Where do you currently work and what is your role?

Penn State Hershey Medical Center. I am a Structural Heart Coordinator and Interventional NP… if it happens in the cath lab, I cover it :) TAVR, MitraClip, Watchman, ETOH septal ablation, PFO/ASD closure, cath and PCI.

How and when did you get interested in the field of cardiology?

I was obsessed with my very first cardiology lecture in nursing school and wanted to learn everything I could. My professor was engaging and enthusiastic and I loved the passion she brought. I (optionally!) read the entire cardiovascular portion of the text and took clinical rotation with my cardiology passionate professor. Choosing my first RN job on a cardiac tele unit was an obvious decision for me. I continued to absolutely love everything I encountered. Learning about the CV system never feels like work.

What do you like about being an ACC member?

Networking has been phenomenal. It’s great to see what others are passionate about as well as how they run their programs or clinics. I think we all have something to learn from each other. Connecting with other cardiology nerds is a bonus.

What hobbies or lifestyle changes have helped to keep you sane during this pandemic?

Really being generous with myself and allowing the same grace I would extend to others. Self-care is not just a good idea in theory, it is essential. You can only give of yourself and care for others when your own cup is full. Yoga, mindfulness, taking guilt free “me” time, and stepping away from news and social media. My to-be-read pile of leisure reading books has grown, much to my liking! Oh! And my puppy… gotta have a dog!
