President's Messagemarch 2024
Dear PaACC Members, Happy spring! Hope everyone enjoyed the mild winter and is starting to get outside. Some highlights from the PaACC Chapter are below:
Everyone still has the opportunity until March 6th to register for the upcoming ACC.24 Scientific Sessions in Atlanta and save $200. To register, follow this link here. The conference is April 6th-8th. Our chapter is having a reception at the AC Lounge in the AC Hotel Downtown Atlanta by Marriott bar on Saturday, April 6th from 5-7:00pm. All are welcome. Also as a reminder, stop by the Fellows Jeopardy competition and cheer on our Chapter’s winning team from Penn State Hershey!
Recently, we sent a reminder that surveys went out from the American Medical Association ’s (AMA ’s) Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) to randomly selected individuals to answer questions regarding the PCI family of codes as well as left atrial appendage closure. Check your email folders to see if you received the survey email from Matt Minnella via noreply@qemailserver.com (it may go to your spam folder). The deadline for both surveys is Tuesday, March 12. If you receive the survey, please take the time to fill it out completely. This is so the RUC has accurate information on the time and complexity of the work we are all doing. To learn more about the RUC process check here.
Our PaACC Women in Cardiology Section, in conjunction with the Mid-Atlantic Women in Cardiology Conference is co-hosting a Zoom session on March 13th titled “Renegotiation: Rethinking Your Next Contract.” The speaker, Victor Cotton, MD, JD, is a physician based out of Hershey, PA who has practiced for over 20 years as a healthcare attorney and is an expert in physician contracts. On February 22nd our Fellows in Training (FIT) section hosted a similar session by Dr. Cotton and Sergio Waxman, MD, MBA on negotiating one’s first employment contract. The FIT’s next program is May 8th, titled “Build Your Brand and Help your Career,” and moderated by our PaACC FIT Representatives Dr. Ato Howard from the West and Dr. Hetty Afari from the East. Our CVTeam is hosting their next Educational Forum Series Topic on March 20th entitled “LVADs: Who, What, Where, When and Why.” This is a free Zoom event with CEU credits but you must register ahead of time here. ACTION NEEDED:ABMS Seeking Comments on the Proposed CV BoardThe American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has announced the start of a 90-day Public Comment Period
seeking input on the new, independent Board of Cardiovascular Medicine
proposed by the ACC, American Heart Association, Heart Failure Society
of America, Heart Rhythm Society and The Society for Cardiovascular
Angiography & Interventions. The comment period is a critical part
of the ABMS application review and an important opportunity for the
cardiovascular community, hospitals and health systems, patients and
other stakeholders to show their support for the new Board and engage in
the decision-making process. All comments must be submitted electronically by July 24. In addition to providing basic identifying information, including your name and email, the comment form consists of three main questions: 1) Do you agree with the creation of a new American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine; 2) Does the new Board meet ABMS requirements for initial certification; and 3) Does the new Board meet ABMS requirements for continuous certification? Along with indicating your agreement, the form includes opportunities to provide any comments related to your responses, as well as a chance to upload a letter or document. Additional comments on the ways a specialized, independent Board of Cardiovascular Medicine would benefit you, your hospital, practice and/or your patients are strongly encouraged. To submit your comments, as well as access detailed FAQs, on-demand webinars and a listing of the initial Board of Directors, visit CVBoard.org. In addition, we encourage you to help spread the word about the comment period using the social media graphic and sample messaging below. Should you need any additional communication support, please contact Shalen Fairbanks (sfairban@acc.org).
